The annual tradition of attending a Hawaii Pacific University men’s basketball game continued this year as our youth basketball players watched HPU take on Chaminade on Sunday, February 8, 2015, in a heated conference rivalry game at the Blaisdell Center. Additionally our players were recognized at halftime and got to participate in the halftime “Knockout” competition, a popular basketball free throw shooting game. An added treat for the youth was the HPU was conducting their annual special promotion of offereing free bike/skateboard helmets for kids. This promo is in honor of a former player, Kameron Steinhoff, a Punahou graduate, who passed away a few years ago in a skateboard accident. All of our youth got a helmet.
Palama Settlement has served as the main practice gym for the men’s basketball team for the past 4 seasons. The players and staff have also graciously coordinated our annual “Scorpion Games”, a series of team building games for our youth football players, and invited our basketball participants to be special guests at one of their games.
Our youth sports/academic program is called Pakolea, translated to “Train to Grow Straight”. Unlike any other youth sports program, Pakolea offers athletic and academic development with equal emphasis. We organize team sports in tackle football, basketball, and volleyball, along with an academic program which includes educational assistance, financial literacy, as well as activities in character development. Each participant is required to attend our Academic Center sessions as a team each week in place of a practice session.

Palama Settlement became one of the fortunate agencies to receive a generous donation from the Great Aloha Run, via Carole Kai Charities. A check in the amount of $1,500 was presented to Executive Director Wendy Abe, which was a portion of proceeds from the annual Great Aloha Run. Additionally, in collaboration with KHON 2 TV, Palama received 50 brand new Addidas athletic shoes.

The monetary donation will support the operations of Palama Settlement, which services nearly 4,000 youth through adults annually inthe greater Kalihi community with programs, services, and facilities. The shoes will be distributed to youth who are in need of appropriate footwear.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS FOR THE REDEVELOPMENT OF
PALAMA SETTLEMENT PROPERTY
(Honolulu, Hawaii, October 15, 2014) – Palama Settlement announced today its Request for
Proposals (RFP) for the redevelopment of its approximate 7 acres located in Kalihi-Palama. The
118-year old social service agency plans to redevelop its property in metropolitan Honolulu so
that it can continue to provide programs to youth, seniors and families in recreation, athletics,
education, and community services.
“Palama Settlement is looking to maximize its land assets so that we can better serve the
community,” said Wendy Abe, executive director of Palama Settlement. “The Board of Trustees,
staff and volunteers have been working diligently to ensure that the future of Palama Settlement
continues to be a vibrant community resource, and the redevelopment project is a big part of
that vision.”
The deadline for the submission of Notices of Intent to Propose is December 15, 2014. The

What has become an annual “kickoff” to the start of our Pakolea Football season, players and coaching staff from the HPU Men’s Basketball team coordinated games and activities on September 12, 2014. Nearly 50 players age 8 – 13 years from our Termite and Pee Wee age division teams took part in various competitions in the gym to promote team unity, fun, and competition. Players were divided into 6 “teams” and accumulated points for each event, such as basketball dribbling relays, hot shot competition, football throwing accuracy, and others.
The tackle football program started practices in August and will be competing in the Island Youth Football League. Games are scheduled to start September 27, 2014. For more information check back here, or go to the Pakolea Program website.
The HPU Men’s Basketball has used the Palama gym as their practices site for 4 years. Their players and coaches have volunteered with our youth sports program each year with this Scorpion Day event as well as volunteering for our summer basketball camps. Youth and staff alike enjoyed Taiko drumming, food, and crafts during the Obon Party held on August 13, 2014. This event is part of an ongoing series of cultural events to expose youth to different activities that are part of various cultures in Hawaii. Previous activities have included Chinese New Year and Cinco De Mayo.
As summer is the Obon season for the Japanese and Okinawan culture, Palama served as host of its own Bon Dance Party. Ten taiko drummers from the Dragon Beat Taiko Club provided rythmic drumming demonstrations for the approximately 70 youth in attendance. Head instructor, or “sensei” Mr. Tsutomu Nakai provided a brief lesson to some of Palama’s youth which definately was a highlight.
Board of Trusteee member Ms. Pat Nishimoto helped to coordinate volunteers to teach the craft of folding origami, or small pieces of paper that can be made into cranes.
Every Bon Dance is known for good food so there was a lot of spam musubi and the Okinawan treat andagi available.
More activities are planned at our Blackfield Youth Activity Center for the coming months, to include a Halloween Haunted Tour, Thanksgiving meal, and Community Christmas party. Call Larry Sweets at 848-2522 for more information.
In an effort to bring community members together, the Community Services Division of Palama Settlement organized the first Community Stakeholders Luncheon on April 3, 2014, at Palama. The purpose is to establish a group with representatives from different Kalihi housing organizations, businesses, and service providers to create a forum for which concerns can be brought to the table and collaborations can develop.
“We hope that people can help each other with some of the issues and problems they are having.” said Pauni Nagaaseu, Community Services Program Manager.
Topics discussed were the processes of food bank distribution, security, property tresspassing, and communication of programs and services. The group intends to meet on a regular basis at Palama.

Kristian Lei, broadway entertainer and singer at this year’s Malama Palama Gala, will be performing in a broadway musical Christmas revue on Friday, December 4 at 8 p.m. and Saturday December 5 at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the New Life Church Theatre. Mrs. Rebecca Kamp often spent her days as a youth in Kalihi running through the campus of Palama Settlement. Whether it was swimming, classes, or spending time with her friends, her memories of those times were happy and safe. She often mentioned various stories and instances that occurred at Palama to her husband Leonard. Upon her passing, it was only fitting that Leonard found a way to reconnect his wife to her youth.
Through the generosity Mr. Leonard Kamp, Jr, on behalf of his late wife, Palama Settlement has established the Rebecca Kwai Hin Kamp Memorial Fund with this gift of $111,000, which will support our youth sports Pakolea Program with participation scholarships, and to re-establish our Performing Arts Program.
The Pakolea Program offers tackle football, basketball, volleyball, and performance training, serving directly nearly 200 youth each year. Participation fees can range from $25.00 to over $300.00. The Rebecca Kwai Hin Kamp Memorial Pakolea Scholarship Fund will now be available for all families in need to offer more youth the opportunity to participate in our student-athlete program which provides academic and behavioral development along with athletic competition. Mr. Kamp has graciously agreed to volunteer and serve on the Scholarship Selection Committee.
The cost for quality professional instruction in the performing arts can be high and volunteers who can provide this service are difficult to find. This grant allowed Palama to start up the Rebecca Kwai Hin Kamp Performing Arts Program with free hula classes for youth and seniors, and ukulele classes for youth.
