In the years after World War II, Palama Settlement’s library was more than just a place for books, it was a gathering space where children came to hear stories that sparked their imagination, connected them to their culture, and opened windows to new worlds.

This photo captures one of those moments, with keiki gathered close, listening intently as a story unfolded. It’s a reminder of Palama’s long history of nurturing learning, community, and curiosity, values we still carry forward today.

With National Book Lovers Day tomorrow, we’re celebrating the power of books and stories to bring people together

Land Acknowledgement
Palama Settlement stands on the Native Hawaiian ancestral lands of Kapālama and Honolulu. We acknowledge that in 1893, Queen Liliʻuokalani yielded the Hawaiian Kingdom under duress to prevent bloodshed. We honor the generations of Kanaka Maoli whose knowledge systems and lifeways continue to steward the ʻāina, wai, and lewa, protecting the lāhui to this day. With a deep sense of kuleana, we integrate Indigenous values and traditions into our programs and services, fostering a community rooted in respect and resilience.
