FAQs

Do I need prior experience to join?

No experience is needed for the Intro class. For the Studio class, some familiarity with Scratch is recommended.

Why isn’t Game Development in Unity offered in the summer?

During the summer, we offer our 3D Modeling class. Unity is a more advanced subject that works best in a longer semester like fall or spring, where students have more time to dive into the challenges of game development and C# coding.

How do I know if my child is ready for the Game Development in Unity class?

Unity is open to beginners, but it's a big leap in complexity. It’s best for kids who are comfortable on a computer, can focus independently, and have a high tolerance for frustration. If your child enjoys solving tough problems and sticking with things when they get tricky, they’re likely ready—even without coding experience.

How do I register?

Email agustafson@palamasettlement.org, call (808) 848-2510, or visit Palama Settlement in person.

Is the program free?

Yes, all classes are free. Donations are welcome to help support the Digital Arts Department.

Where are the classes located?

Classes take place at Palama Settlement, 810 N. Vineyard Blvd, in the Cecilia Blackfield Academic Center.

Do I need to bring my own equipment?

Nope! All materials and equipment are provided. Just bring your creativity and a willingness to learn!

What if I miss a class?

We understand things come up. Just let the instructor know as soon as possible — we’ll do our best to help your child catch up.

Land Acknowledgement
Palama Settlement stands on the Native Hawaiian ancestral lands of Kapālama and Honolulu. We acknowledge that in 1893, Queen Liliʻuokalani yielded the Hawaiian Kingdom under duress to prevent bloodshed. We honor the generations of Kanaka Maoli whose knowledge systems and lifeways continue to steward the ʻāina, wai, and lewa, protecting the lāhui to this day. With a deep sense of kuleana, we integrate Indigenous values and traditions into our programs and services, fostering a community rooted in respect and resilience.
